Highlights from IFA Berlin 2017: Trends and Devices for Real Techies

It looks like CES Las Vegas has a serious competitor. IFA Berlin, which initially was an exhibition of home appliances and white goods, is now transforming into one of the biggest consumer tech events in Europe. For the giants like Samsung, Sony and Lenovo the show is the place to debut their biggest products before the holiday season. For the European startups, it’s a place to gather first-hand feedback from tech users without flying overseas. Borys Pratsiuk, Ciklum’s Head of R&D Engineering, has landed in Berlin to find out the consumer tech trends and get acquainted with the latest tech gimmicks from robocats to WiFi cleaners and smartphones.

Main trends from IFA Berlin 2017:

  • Home electronics has already became connected IoT with players like Siemens, Liebherr, Bosch, etc.
  • Vacuum cleaners are now much smarter and ready for mass production. It can’t order you pizza yet, but can already recognize you in a crowd.
  • Home TV standard now is 4k, but 8k and 10k displays are already there.
  • China is pushing with its tech power by presenting more and more devices (Huawei, etc.)
  • Many devices are equipped with the conversational interface (Alexa, Google Home). These are mainly used in the smart home ecosystem.

Among hundreds of the consumer tech products showcased at the Berlin IFA event, we have highlighted several interesting ones.

Smart Fridges. Smart Vacuum Cleaners. Smart Trash

In 2017, IFA became the destination place for the connected home devices. Liebherr’s smart refrigerators will help the user recognize the items stored in the fridge, determine the best conditions for food storage and voice control capabilities.

In cooperation with Microsoft, Liebherr Domestic Alliances plan to introduce the intelligent food management to help consumers with the shopping and meal planning.

A French startup Uzer is hoping to encourage better recycling habits with its Eugene, a smart trash can telling users what they can recycle and can track what they’re consuming. You can scan the consumed product’s barcode and Eugene will tell you how to sort its parts in trash, as well as will remember the eaten product and add it to your shopping list.

How much digital can be a coffee machine? EQ.9 by Siemens offers you a coffeePlaylist, which memorizes your favourite coffee drinks. BaristaMode will help you choose right coffee taste and blend. And the coffeeWorld function will suggest you choosing the right one from the coffee tastes from all over the world.

These are the Siemens steps into a Home Connect network, where you can connect all your home appliances in a digital world and work with them remotely.

Many IoT connectivity platforms were presented at IFA Berlin 2017. Tones of sensors connected to the cloud for continuous data stream.

Among the variety of platforms, Ciklum in partnership with Ayla Networks did education sessions on how to start your IoT project.

Cats. Headphones. Organs

China-based Qihan has presented its Sanbot Nano, a 2.7-foot tall home assistant robot with Alexa serving as its ears and brain.

Sanbot Nano circumvents the obstacles and detects people entering the room with the help of 50 sensors. The user can order food, check fitness stats and even play some music through its connection to Amazon Alexa.

Catspad is the automatic cat feeder connected with your smartphone.

Except the automatic food and water dispensing via smartphone, which are quite common already, Catspad has nutrition calculator, and cat’s diet monitoring function sharing the food consumption data with your vet.

BATBAND from the Studio Banana Things are the ear-free headphones. The Studio is the creator of the Ostrich pillow, a large pillow you stick your head inside to avoid external noise and to get a nap. Batband works via bone conduction, consisting of transducers that emit sound waves perceived by your “private” inner ear, thus freeing your “social” outer ear. Sound waves are transmitted at a frequency that can be conducted through the bones of the skull. They leave your ears free to listen for cars or people while still delivering music to your mind.

Insider info: the Studio Banana Things doesn’t mind adding a medical component to the next model of device, which was also discussed with Ciklum’s R&D Engineering at IFA.

Organ as a Service, a concept by Intuity Media Lab GmbH and Cellbricks GmbH. The team showcased the 3D mini-organs concept to produce specific living tissues and unique copies of organs, which can then serve as a substitute for animal experiments in biological and pharmaceutical research.

The bio printer and software ecosystem integrate easy-to-use and intuitive user interfaces that enable professional tissue printing in just a few steps.
